Scania’s proven common rail XPI (extra-high pressure) fuel-injection technology has arrived in the marine sector.

Scania’s proven common rail XPI (extra-high pressure) fuel-injection technology has arrived in the marine sector with the introduction of the company’s latest V8 engine. Boasting commercial ratings of up to 1,150 horsepower, (846kW), a Scania V8 DI16 power unit featuring XPI will form the centrepiece of Scania’s stand (Q23) at Seawork 2016. Also on display will be a six-cylinder, 13-litre DI13 unit.

“Scania’s common-rail XPI fuel-injection system has long been used in our engines for trucks and industrial applications, where it has earned a reputation for reliability and fuel-efficiency,” says Ray Johnson, General Manager for Scania Engines. “While the fuel quality required for marine applications is different, filter technology has now reached a level that allows for performance and uptime to be maintained at the high level that we and our customers expect.

“Our new V8 engine range is class-leading in terms of its fuel consumption, delivering savings of up to five percent compared to competitive models. It also provides an excellent choice for applications where power and performance are required in a lightweight, compact package. As such, we see typical installations being high speed patrol boats and planning hull vessels.”

While the new V8 range represents an increase in power on the previous generation, the physical size of the complete installation has remained the same making it easy to upgrade an existing V8 installation to the new engine platform. Scania’s modular system in combination with the company’s Engine Management System (EMS) allows for the same platform to be used in different applications. An engine solution can thus be tailored for completely different operating profiles without compromise
