Scania modular combustion concept

Scania modular combustion concept

What makes Scania producing engines so rugged and fuel efficient?

We have always developed new engines by starting with the creation of an optimised single cylinder unit. Variations in aspects of the design are evaluated and refined, leading to power outputs with the most desirable characteristics.

At Scania, we aim to produce engines with the best possible characteristics for economy, reliability, low emissions and low cost of operation.

In the course of developing various single-cylinder engines of different displacements, it has become apparent that certain factors related to volume are critical.

Quite simply, the potential for optimisation – good economy, low emissions and generous torque – is at its greatest when physical dimensions of the bore and stroke are within certain critical limits. This insight has led to the development of the Scania modular combustion concept.

All Scania bus, coach and truck engines currently in production are based on this advanced concept. These engines have identical combustion chambers and share components such as pushrods, valve gears, roller tappets and piston rings. Cylinder heads, liners and valves are identical; the shape of piston crowns is also a common feature.
