The environment

Legal requirements for emissions from industrial and marine engines are being tightened at an accelerating pace. Environmental protection is a global concern and the key issue for all engine applications is exhaust emissions.

It is Scania´s policy to care for the environment and support the introduction of international emission standards. Scania is taking an active part in discussing regulations and how to implement them in discussions with regulators from EU and USA.

But to Scania, meeting standards is not enough. For many years our engine research and development has focused on mastering the balance between emission levels, economy and performance.

All charge cooled Scania industrial engines for non-road mobile applications comply with the European 97/68/EC and US exhaust emission regulations, both based on ISO 8178. Plus limits to come.

For mobile power generation there are regulations in US, and will be in EU, included in the nonroad mobile machine regulations. For stationary power-generation engines there are regulations in some countries written to cut out diesel engines if not very expensive aftertreatment devices are used.
On other countries there are no nation-wide regulations why the situation is impossible to follow from outside. Stand-by generator sets are however in most cases excluded from the regulations as their operation is very limited.

Scania´s modular engine-design system effectively contributes to a lower environmental impact.

Each engine can be tailored to meet the customer´s individual needs. With fewer components needed to build the complete range, carefully considered choice of materials and processes and high product quality, the consumption of energy and raw materials will be lower. This leads to lower environmental load throughout the lifecycle of the engine - from development and production, via service and repairs, to scrapping and recycling.
