For many types of application, frequent gearchanging is inevitable. And naturally, the more frequent, the more quickly the friction material will wear – and the more likely the clutch will require premature or unscheduled maintenance.

However, the rate of wear has as much to do with the actuation, as its frequency. Quite simply, the closer to perfectly timed and executed engagements, the better, because wear will be minimised.

What’s more, the smoother the actuation, the less the powertrain will suffer from sudden torque shocks and reactions – so there’s a further gain with increased service life and potentially reduced overhaul costs for the entire transmission system.
