Total operating economy

Fuel economy: success from Euro 3 all the way to Euro 4 and Euro 5

Fuel economy – what makes the difference? At the heart of all our engines is the Scania modular combustion concept.

Of course, there are many factors that influence fuel economy, such as vehicle weight, aerodynamics, rolling resistance, transmission matching, driving expertise and driveability. Operating factors also have an effect; types of road, traffic congestion, and so on. All these are issues that feature prominently in Scania’s research and development.

The starting point.
But above all else, good fuel economy starts with achieving attaining the best possible combustion efficiency. The Scania approach to achieving such a condition right across the engine range is unique.
By developing an optimised simple single cylinder unit capable of outstandingly high combustion efficiency, Scania has created a module for all engines.
The combustion chambers for all these engines are virtually identical. By concentrating research and development of combustion technology in this way, it has been is possible to reach ever higher levels a level of refinement that is benefit beneficial for fuel economy, driveability, reliability, easy maintenance and low emissions right across the engine range.

Scania modular combustion concept: a record of success.
Evidence of the value of our approach to engine development is the highly successful progression through Euro 1, Euro 2 and Euro 3. Through each step, Scania engines have maintained their reputation for outstanding fuel economy, driveability and performance.

Now we have the next two steps: Euro 4 and Euro 5. And once again, the modular combustion concept has demonstrated its inherent potential for development and enhancement.

By developing both EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) and SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction), it has been possible for Scania to apply the most appropriate technology and thus achieve overall operating economy that matches the very best of our Euro 3 engines.
