Corby Chilled Distribution Limited is set to become the UK’s first major operator of Highline-cabbed Scania R-series trucks in an order which will see 40 R 420 4x2MNA tractor units enter service with this Northamptonshire-based operator between now and January 2005.
Being supplied by Derek Jones Commercials Limited, Wellingborough, the bulk of trucks in the order are to replace existing vehicles in the Corby Chilled Distribution fleet. “Currently around 75 per cent of our 200-strong fleet are Scanias,” comments the company’s Managing Director, Iain Stewart. “That notwithstanding, we researched the market before once again selecting Scania, principally on the grounds of fuel consumption, driver acceptability, service backup and residual values.
“Certainly the early indications for the new R-series are encouraging: We have been operating one standard R-cabbed 420hp model since June and it is considerably outperforming our existing 4-series 420s in terms of fuel consumption. Also, our drivers have been extremely positive about the new interior and are very much looking forward to the introduction of the Highline cab into the fleet.”
Corby Chilled Distribution’s new Scania trucks will be based at three of the company’s six operating centres, Corby, Heywood in Lancashire and Newark, Nottinghamshire.
Plated at 38 tonnes and with anticipated mileages of 150,000 miles per annum, the vehicles are all being supplied on three year contract hire packages which include all repair and maintenance. For the Corby-based trucks the service work will be undertaken by Derek Jones Commercials, West Pennine in Middleton will look after the Heywood vehicles while the Newark vehicles will be maintained by Scania dealer, East Midland Commercials, Newark.
Corby Chilled Distribution Limited was formed in 1993 and is a family run business.
