Tican Chilled chooses Scania Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) vehicles from Keltruck to cut carbon emissions as part of meat wholesaler’s sustainability strategy
Keltruck, the largest independently owned distributor in the Scania worldwide network, has supplied two new Scania CNG powered vehicles to Walsall-based Tican Chilled, a market-leading meat wholesaler delivering throughout England and Wales. This will help the environment by reducing carbon emissions, as well as saving money on fuel.
The 18-ton vehicles have Hultstein fridge units, which run from a live Power Take-Off (PTO) drive on the back of the vehicle’s nine litre gas-powered engine, thus harnessing the engine’s power to drive the fridge’s compressor directly. In use, they are expected to reduce the fridges’ carbon emissions by around 90%, in line with Tican Chilled’s targets as part of its sustainability drive.
Keltruck’s name is well known throughout the industry for quality and choosing the Scania product, another leading player in the market place, made sense and fits with our commitment to increased sustainability.
We strongly believe in our responsibility to decrease our carbon footprint and help the fragile environment. Alternative fuels are the future and choosing gas trucks was an easy business decision. With gas infrastructure increasing monthly we saw the potential for cost savings straight away – and our data analysis proves us to be correct.
Ian Adderley, Group Transport Manager at Tican Chilled
I had the pleasure of delivering these gas-powered Scania trucks to Tican Chilled, which were the company’s first Scania vehicles to enter their fleet. As a company, sustainability is always at the forefront of what Keltruck does, with fuel consumption being one of the main factors for customers buying a Scania vehicle.”
Tony Biddlestone, Keltruck Scania Account Manager
Scania has produced gas-powered vehicles for almost 100 years, with one of the earliest recorded examples being buses adapted to run on producer gas during the First World War years. In more recent times the company has supplied gas engines for various applications in a number of countries worldwide.
Tican Chilled is part of the Tican Group, a highly diversified international food business headquartered in Denmark that began exporting high quality meat over 85 years ago. Tican Chilled delivers from seven UK hubs.
